What are the Costs of Care?

As we age there are many challenges both physically and mentally to overcome.  The first place senior get help is with the activities of daily living (ADL’s).  These are duties that typically take place in the home and include Cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, medication management, laundry and transportation.  In addition, it is very common to need help grooming, bathing, toileting or with incontinence care.  This is often the point in which a family caregiver will often ask for outside help to assist their parent.

Typically a non-medical Caregiver or Domestic Aide will visit the home several days a week ranging from 3-24 hours a day.  In San Luis Obispo, you have options of using a full service Home Care agency which typically charges between $27 – $32 an hour or a Referral Agency that finds screened Independent Caregivers that usually results in a savings of about $5 per hour.  There are advantages and disadvantages to each service, it really depends on your needs.
